The history of Art Escudellers
Art Escudellers is located in the heart of Barcelona, at C/ Escudellers 23-25. During the 13th and 14th centuries, Escudellers street was home to the potters’ guild: it was occupied mainly by the “Ollers”, potters specialised in making pots and pans. Towards the end of the 14th century the “Ollers” were replaced by the “Escudellers”, potters specialised in the production of “escudelles”, bowls that were used for practically everything at the time and were made in different sizes and with different decorations.
In the following centuries, thanks to its proximity to the port of Barcelona, the street became a street of wealthy shops. Little by little these businesses declined and, between 1940 and 1990, it became the street best known in Barcelona for its nightlife. Since the 1990s, and especially after the 1992 Olympic Games, the street has been renewed with the arrival of new shops.
In 1997 Art Escudellers opened here with the ambition of one day recovering the origins that the very name of the street indicates. Still today, in some Catalan dictionaries, the word “escudeller” means potter.
Who we are
Art Escudellers is a young and dynamic company whose aim is to promote handicrafts produced mainly in Spain, while achieving high levels of satisfaction among our customers. We have been working in Barcelona without interruption since 1997 to make traditional ceramic crafts and guilds known to both the national and international public.
We represent craftsmen from all over Spain. Art Escudellers gives more than 200 artisans the opportunity to keep working at their trade, joining efforts to offer the customer an original, creative and quality product.
In our shops you will find traditional popular ceramics, whose techniques have been handed down from generation to generation, from parents to children, as well as contemporary ceramics made up of exclusive and unique pieces. Our exclusive table and home accessories bring joy and colour to your house. We also offer garden products (planters, fountains, benches, pots and jars), blown glass, fused glass and tiles.
We offer a wide catalogue of more than 30,000 different products, to which we continuously add new references. All items are handmade and decorated by the artists using different techniques.
Our products are original, unique and produced in limited quantities, mainly in Spain, although we also continuously try to introduce crafts from other parts of the world.
